Sunday's Story - Lou and Coal
“Just one question before we get in the car, why did you do
it?”
My best friend tried to jump in front of a train today. I can’t
even… My body is running so high on emotions that I’m shaking, but she seems to
feel nothing at all.
Presently she’s a lifeless plug. Nothing but a plastic
casing around a fuse that’s empty of charge. I ran so fast, jumped the barrier
and nearly attacked the floor several times. But she’s still. There was nothing
I could do except hold her, she leant forward pushing her full body weight on
my mediocre arms. She used everything she had to try and make it easy for me,
to just let her slip past me and onto the track.
She rang me just before and recited her favourite quote; “’It
does nothing to relinquish yourself in times full of hate, but rather you
should free yourself, by immersing yourself in the things that bring you peace’
Coal, I’ll love you forever”
“Lou, where are you?”
a phone call that starts with a quote has never been a good sign, it’s her
tell; the one clue in the mystery that actually has all the answers you need to
solve it. She didn’t answer but the sound of the passing train let me in on her
secret. She hung up.
There are so many
things that give people a story, Lou was not an exception. She was an author of
the highest standard with a story that only a mere few got to read. I had never
met someone so intricate before her, I’d sat on her coat and she refused my
apology because she believed I had nothing to be sorry for. “These things
happen” she admitted “and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
She believed that to be human was to have fault; that was
what made us humane. She saw and she accepted and there was nothing more to it.
No questions ever. So I was shocked
when she opened the car door and that question flew from her mouth.
Just a little short story,
*Author's note - this short story is completely fictional*
